gerald-weinberg and dani-weinberg's consulting practice, founded in 1969 when Jerry left IBM after thirteen years at ibm-federal-systems-division. Through Weinberg & Weinberg, they delivered consulting, training, and workshops to software organizations for nearly five decades.

Scope of Work

The firm's consulting work focused on the human and organizational dimensions of software development — the territory Weinberg had staked out in psychology-of-computer-programming-1971 and expanded throughout his career. Engagements typically addressed organizational culture, management effectiveness, team dynamics, and the interpersonal patterns that determine software quality. The quality-software-management-framework provided the diagnostic framework; congruent-behavior and the satir-change-model provided the intervention tools.

Workshops

The firm's most significant offerings were its workshops, particularly the Problem Solving Leadership (PSL) workshop (psl-workshop-founded-1974) and the Change Shop. PSL became the capstone of Weinberg's teaching practice — an intensive, residential, experiential program that produced over 3,000 graduates across four decades. The Change Shop, conceived with virginia-satir in 1988 and continued after her death by jean-mclendon, brought family systems therapy techniques into organizational settings.

Influence

Weinberg & Weinberg operated as a small, relationship-driven practice rather than scaling into a large consulting firm. This was consistent with Weinberg's own consulting philosophy — the helpful-model-of-consulting emphasizes building client capability rather than creating consultant dependency, which does not optimize for revenue growth. The firm's influence was disproportionate to its size: many of its alumni — including esther-derby, johanna-rothman, james-bach, and don-gray — went on to build their own practices, carrying Weinberg's approach into new organizations and communities.
