A structured problem-solving and communication method based on the A3-size paper (11x17 inches): everything needed to define a problem, analyze root causes, propose countermeasures, and track results must fit on a single A3 sheet. The constraint forces clarity and prevents the common organizational failure of substituting volume of analysis for quality of thinking. A3 thinking follows a PDCA structure: the left side defines the problem and analyzes causes (Plan), the right side proposes and tracks countermeasures (Do-Check-Act). At toyota-motor-corporation, A3 reports are the standard format for problem-solving, proposals, and status reporting — from the shop floor to the boardroom. fujio-cho, taiichi-ohno's student, emphasized A3 thinking as a mentoring tool: the mentor coaches by asking questions about the A3, not by providing answers. John Shook's "Managing to Learn" (2008) codified A3 thinking for Western audiences.
