TPS matures from a production method to a complete management system. taiichi-ohno extends TPS across all of toyota-motor-corporation's operations and into the supplier network (denso and others). Techniques are refined: heijunka, standard-work, and a3-thinking are systematized. The 1973 oil crisis is the pivotal event: while Western automakers stagger under fuel price shocks and inventory costs, Toyota's lean system recovers faster than any competitor, demonstrating TPS's resilience. Japanese competitors begin studying and copying Toyota's methods. taiichi-ohno publishes toyota-production-system-beyond-large-scale-production in 1978 and workplace-management in 1982. shigeo-shingo publishes his major works. By 1980, TPS is fully developed — the question becomes transmission.
