taiichi-ohno publishes toyota-production-system-beyond-large-scale-production through Diamond, Inc. — the first comprehensive written account of TPS by its creator. Until this publication, TPS knowledge existed primarily as oral tradition transmitted through gemba practice at toyota-motor-corporation. The book's publication was significant but its immediate impact was limited to Japan. The English translation (Productivity Press, 1988) would bring Ohno's thinking to Western audiences a decade later, after the-machine-that-changed-the-world had already created demand for understanding TPS. Ohno's writing style — direct, concrete, allergic to abstraction — meant that many Western readers found the book less accessible than the later codifications by Womack, Jones, and Liker.
