Chris Argyris (1923–2013) was a professor at Harvard Business School and one of the twentieth century's most influential theorists of organizational learning. His career-long project — conducted largely in collaboration with donald-schon — was to understand why organizations systematically fail to learn from experience, and what it would take to change that. His core concepts include single-loop versus double-loop learning, theories-in-use versus espoused theories, and defensive routines.

Argyris's distinction between single-loop and double-loop learning maps onto the difference between correcting errors within an existing framework and questioning the framework itself. Most organizational learning is single-loop: people solve problems without examining the mental models and assumptions that generated the problem. Double-loop learning requires surfacing and testing those underlying assumptions — what Argyris called examining "theories-in-use" rather than the "espoused theories" people articulate when asked. He argued that the main obstacle to double-loop learning is defensive routines: the socially skilled behaviors by which individuals and organizations protect themselves from the discomfort of genuine inquiry. His book "Organizational Learning" (co-written with Schon, 1978) and "Overcoming Organizational Defenses" (1990) are the foundational texts.

peter-senge drew heavily on Argyris's framework in developing the mental-models discipline in fifth-discipline-1990. The tools Argyris developed — particularly the "Ladder of Inference" and the "Left-Hand Column" technique — appear directly in fifth-discipline-fieldbook-1994. The relationship between their projects reveals an important difference in orientation: Argyris was primarily a diagnostician, rigorously analyzing why organizational learning fails; Senge was more aspirational and prescriptive, offering a vision of what a learning-organization could become. Argyris sometimes expressed skepticism about whether Senge's prescriptions addressed the defensive dynamics he had spent decades documenting.
