Overview

The Leading Edge Forum (LEF) was the independent research arm of CSC (Computer Sciences Corporation), later DXC Technology after CSC merged with Hewlett Packard Enterprise's Enterprise Services division in 2017. Wardley served as a researcher at LEF for 13 years, specializing in "the intersection of IT strategy and new technologies." His tenure ended in late 2023, as announced on his LinkedIn (where he wrote "the end of one era beckons another").

Role in Wardley's Career

LEF provided Wardley with an institutional platform to develop and disseminate his framework beyond individual company applications. As a research organization focused on technology strategy, LEF was a natural home for the mapping framework — it allowed Wardley to work with multiple organizations and refine the framework across diverse contexts. The 13-year tenure makes LEF by far the longest institutional affiliation of Wardley's career.

Significance

The LEF period represents Wardley's transition from practitioner (using mapping in specific organizations like Fotango and Canonical) to researcher and teacher (developing mapping as a general strategic methodology). The institutional backing of a research organization gave Wardley access to a broader range of strategic situations and organizational contexts than any single company role would have provided.
