Overview
Richards' military and defense period encompasses his early career in service and analysis, during which he encountered john-boyd and became embedded in the defense intellectual community that formed around Boyd's strategic thinking.
Background and Education
Richards holds a PhD in mathematics from university-of-mississippi. That mathematical training proved directly consequential: Boyd approached Richards to review the mathematical portions of "Destruction and Creation," his foundational philosophical paper on entropy and cognition. This review assignment was how the collaboration between them began.
Richards is a retired colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, commissioned in 1969 through Army ROTC at the University of Mississippi. His career included positions at the Pentagon beginning in 1971 — including work on the Lightweight Fighter Program that led to both the F-16 and F/A-18 — as well as employment with Northrop Grumman, CACI, and Lockheed Martin. This trajectory through the core of the U.S. defense-industrial complex gave him deep institutional knowledge of the organizations Boyd's ideas were designed to reform. He retired from the Reserve in 1999.
Encountering Boyd
The formative event of this period was Richards' direct contact with john-boyd and Boyd's evolving body of work. Boyd's briefings — particularly the sprawling "Patterns of Conflict" and the conceptual framework that would become ooda-based-competition — were not published in conventional form. They were transmitted through personal contact, briefing sessions, and the oral culture of Boyd's inner circle. Richards was among those who received this transmission directly.
Richards' contribution was not merely receptive. He constructed the first graphics of the OODA loop from Boyd's sketches, giving visual form to a conceptual structure that had previously existed only in Boyd's hand-drawn notes and verbal explanations. He is also the only person to have delivered Boyd's "Patterns of Conflict" briefing since Boyd's death in 1997 — a remarkable act of intellectual stewardship that required mastery of the full briefing's content and intent.
Defense Analysis Work
Richards' work in defense contexts gave him practical grounding in the strategic questions Boyd was theorizing. This period produced dni-articles and related analytical work through defense-and-the-national-interest, the web platform that Richards and others in Boyd's network used to distribute defense reform analysis.
Building the Foundation
The military and defense period established the technical fluency that made Richards' later translation work credible. He was not an outsider importing Boyd's ideas secondhand — he had engaged with them in their original military context, participated in the community that refined them, and understood the strategic problems they were designed to solve. His mathematical background and his hands-on role in constructing the OODA loop's visual language gave him a distinctive authority within the Boyd circle.
The period closes at Boyd's death and the formal end of the Boyd circle as an active collaborative formation. What followed was business-translation-period, in which Richards would take this military intellectual inheritance and carry it into new domains.
