Workplace Economic Conversion Action Network

``` Date: Mon, 6 Jun 1994 06:09:44 -0700 From: Council on Economic Priorities WORKPLACE ECONOMIC CONVERSION ACTION NETWORK 1775 K St., NW, Suite 630 Washington, DC 20006 phone: (202) 833-7915 fax: (202) 833-1424 email: dbertell@gmu.edu or cepmilco@echonyc.com June 5, 1994 Dear Friend of Economic Conversion: The Workplace Economic Conversion Action Network (WE*CAN) will be holding its second annual conference on Capitol Hill on June 21-22, 1994. We hope you will be able to join us as WE*CAN sets its agenda for the coming year. This year's conference will focus on conversion prospects and projects in four regions: the Nevada Test Site, Oak Ridge (Tennessee), Southern California, and New England. Over the two days we will try to develop region and sector-specfic initiatives that we can back as a network. The nationwide WE*CAN Coalition is composed of labor, business, community, environmental, peace, policy, and religious organizations. Our speakers will be key players from the above regions, government officials, and experts drawn from WE*CAN's diverse constituencies. Beyond discussion, the conference is designed to be action-oriented. Through our panels and follow up, we will develop strategies to help advance specific conversion projects (such as the Nevada Test Site conversion, and the new Regional Advanced Manufacturing Project in Los Angeles), to build more conversion coalitions around the country (such as the Call to Action in New England), and to see how our program can advance the agendas of allies working to advance job-retention, community reinvestment, transportation, clean energy, and environmental cleanup goals. At the end of the conference we will set the agenda and goals for WE*CAN in the coming year. The conference will meet on the first day in Senate Hart Office Building, Room 902 and the second day in SC 5 in the basement of the Capitol. Registration fees (which cover two lunches, refreshments, and printing) are $45 for people from member organizations and $80 for people from non-member organizations (this includes membership; additional attendees are then $45). A special registration fee of $5 will be offered to those who only wish to attend part of the conference. Everyone is welcome, but only representatives from member organizations will be allowed to participate in the agenda-setting sessions. We are co-hosting a reception with the Center for Economic Conversion from 5:30-7:30 Monday night, June 20, at the Stewart Mott House, which will be free and open to all. Because of tight budget constraints, we are unable to subsidize transportation or lodging. Arrangements have been made to hold rooms at American University (AU) on the evenings of June 20 (Monday) and June 21 (Tuesday). These rooms will be $25/person double occupancy and $40/person single occupancy. AU is in a safe and lovely part of Washington (about 25 minutes from Capitol Hill by Metro), and the facilities include a 24 hour desk, a cafeteria, and access to health and fitness facilities. The time is right to put our accumulated experience into action behind concrete projects and new federal initiatives. Please save the dates and join us on June 21 and 22.
