Hi Colleagues,

I thought I would send you this message as it summarizes the set of curricular materials that are now available, either free, or at cost, for teachers and students to use. Note that NASA-TV is re-broadcasting all four programs tomorrow (Sat. Feb. 25).

The "Field Journals" entries posted today are from the scientists and support crew who made the difficult decision to "Winter Over" and their reflections as they watch the others leave. There are only 28 people left at the South Pole and it is closed for the dark Winter months. If you want to know what it is like to live in that world you can follow the thoughts and reflections of these Antarctic adventurers through their journals.

There are four one-hour videos, full of information about Antarctica, interactions between scientists and students, and examples of classrooms activities that can help your students get involved in their own hands-on research. Originally broadcast on many public television stations, they can also be see on NASA-TV. Educators have extended off-air record and in-class rights!

Watch NASA-TV on Saturday Feb 25, they will run back to back at 08:00 thru 12:00. NASA-TV can be found on SPACENET 2, transponder 5 (channel 9) frequency 3880.0 Mhz, horizontal polarization; the audio can be found on 6.2 and 6.8. Many cable systems, community colleges and other local satellite systems are used to accessing NASA-TV, and may be willing to make tapes for you, if you so arrange.

The Internet is a vast library of exciting materials. We have helped create a focal point for information about Antarctica and research topics that are related to this vast and exciting continent. Our World Wide Web page and gopher links will provide an instant library of rich and varied resources for your students.

A special set of NSF files allow access to materials previously never publicly available, such as the Field Manual and the "Your Stay" series provided to every researcher who visits Antarctica, designed to keep them safe in the extremes of weather. Have your students research what it takes to stay safe in a crevasse field, or how to build a snow shelter! Let them read the brochure which describes everyday life at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station!

Your students can follow along with some of the different travelers who go to the ICE to as researchers, members of the support teams, or even tv producers!

Your students can imagine they have joined 17-year old Elizabeth Felton as she follows her dream of later becoming and astronaut by going to the South Pole to study astronomy. Or maybe some of your students will want to be film makers and will enjoy the journey from the perspectives of the producers of Live from Antarctica. Some may be captivated by how April Lloyd, a 3rd-grade teacher from Virginia, explores this new world in the hope of bringing back ideas to help make her teaching more exciting.

Or perhaps it will be the researcher exploring the ozone hole or the radio operator who use her skill to make research safe that will provide the perspective that you are looking for. Teachers who have participated report that often even reserved students have become engaged by their encounters with real researchers reporting from real locations.

Students have been sending in their questions and we have been linking them with scientists and other Antarctic respondents to create a rich data base of questions and answers for students to learn from. We have both teacher forum and students forums for interaction among classrooms.

Several teacher participants have sponsored collaborative projects as extensions of their involvement in Live From Antarctica. Calls for participation have been posted to the Discuss-LFA list or in the Learning Center forums. Here's an opportunity for further integrating Live From Antarctica into the curriculum and at the same time getting to know students and teachers from far away places!

If you and your students have no online access in your classroom, you are not excluded! While this may not be as much fun as "surfing the internet" the ready availability on computer disk will provide an easy and time efficient way to use the different resources of this project.

The programs were "LIVE" FROM ANTARCTICA, but the videotapes and resource materials were designed to remain "lively" long after the initial broadcasts. LIVE FROM THE STATOSPHERE will involve several science museums and other partners, who will host overnight "camp-ins" in conjunction with live programming from flight aboard NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory, with its infrared telescope. We hope the project will begin with the opening of the 1995 school year in September, with -- perhaps -- two programs airing during school hours, and then a "virtual night flight" aboard the Kuiper. The Kuiper's infrared telescope will let students look at planets and stars and galaxies...and at the origins of celestial objects.

LIVE FROM THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE will provide us a unique opportunity to experiment with the nature of our partnership. In September while we are taking you on the Kuiper, we will announce a kind of "Request for Student Proposals" for astronomical observations to be undertaken ACTUALLY ON THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE! An agreement with the Space Telescope Science Institute, which manages Hubble for NASA, will allow some students to undertake investigations on the nation's premier space telescope, through the commitment of Director's Discretionary Observing Time!!! Developing a quality proposal will obviously require a large amount of background information, but fortunately the STScI Home Page and STEIS is already very extensive, with excellent data and pictures! We plan to have astronomers, and graduate and undergraduate students, "tele-mentor" students around the nation over the Internet, and then select winning proposals, and refine them, with the observations themselves forming the focus of LIVE FROM THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE in late Spring/early Summer 1996. This process, also involving "peer review" of proposals by student evaluators, is designed to mirror how NSF and other research agencies actually select proposals.
