CONNECTING ALL AMERICANS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY: TELECOMMUNICATIONS LINKS IN LOW INCOME AND RURAL COMMUNITIES

The Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Public Utility Law Project are co-sponsoring an important and timely national conference, CONNECTING ALL AMERICANS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY: TELECOMMUNICATIONS LINKS IN LOW INCOME AND RURAL COMMUNITIES. The conference will focus specifically on programs and policies designed to improve the level of connectivity to advanced information technology in these communities.

Vice President Al Gore has agreed, subject to final confirmation, to present one of the keynote addresses. We are expecting five hundred key participants, including regulators from state and local governments and grassroots representatives from communities across the country, to attend this event to be held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Washington, D.C. on February 24 through February 27, 1998. We also have invited Congressional leaders engaged in universal service and other communications policymaking to participate.

The conference will feature interactive demonstrations of ten successful projects that are serving low income and rural Americans in schools, libraries, health care facilities, and community-based organizations. Conference participants will identify goals and develop action plans to ensure that our country will not be a society of information adn technology haves and have-nots. In addition, we have planned a post-conference workshop on February 27th to discuss the nuts and bolts of developing and funding a Community Advanced Technology Business Plan.

To register or receive more information about the conference check the conference web site or contact Trudi Renwick at 1-800-255-7857 or .
