THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION (ISTE) ANNOUNCES KEYNOTE SPEAKERS FOR TEL*ED '95,

A leading advocacy group for educational technology and its international Special Interest Group for Telecommunications (SIG/Tel) have teamed up with their Florida organization affiliate, the Florida Association for Computers in Education (FACE), to co-host a premier telecommunications conference of worldwide stature. The Fourth International Conference on Telecommunications in Education (Tel*Ed '95) will be held at the Broward County Convention Center, =46ort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, from November 30 through December 3, 1995. November 30 and December 3 are pre- and post- conference workshop days. December 1 and 2 are full conference days.

Reed Hundt, Chair of the Federal Communications Commission will be the featured opening Keynote on Friday, December 1, at 9:15am at the Broward County Convention Center. Hundt will challenge pioneering educators to seize the opportunities of this unprecedented era. He will be followed by:

Alvaro Guadiana is presently directing the Educational Communication Department of the Nuevo Leon State Department of Education in Mexico. He has been working in the area of Education for the last 27 years, both as a teacher and administrator. He will be speaking on Education and Communication: An Anthropological Perspective.

Linda Harasim will be the keynote speaker at the Friday banquet at 7:00 pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Broward County Convention Center. She is the leader of the collaborative TeleLearning Research Network which links researchers throughout Canada to address major challenges that Canada faces in becoming a learning society with a knowledge-based economy.

Vinton Cerf, often referred to as the "Father of the Internet" will address participants on Saturday, December 2 at 9:15 am. Vinton Cerf, who co-developed the computer networking protocol, TCP/IP that allows 20 million users to communicate over the Internet will discuss the the present and future of telecommunications.

Conference Co-Chairs are Lynne Schrum, Department of Instructional Technology, University of Georgia; and Ana Gutierrez Mackay, FACE 95/96 Region VI President. Program Co-Chairs are Margaret Riel, ISTE SIG/Tel 94-95 Vice- President; and Cathy Hutchins, FACE 95-96 State President. The Conference Committee also includes Bill Schmid, Director of Florida Information Resource Network (FIRN); and Peter Lenkway, Florida Department of Education Representative.

Tel*Ed '95 co-sponsors include Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), SouthEastern Regional Vision for Education (SERVE), Texas Education Network (TENET), Barry University, Nova Southeastern University, =46lorida Information Resource Network (FIRN), Broward, Dade, and Monroe County Schools.

Tel*Ed '95 officials invite all those interested in telecommunications to attend this year's conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Tel*Ed '95 is the fourth in a series of international educational telecommunications conferences. The initial conference was held in Israel in 1989. Since then, attendance has been steadily growing and Tel*Ed '95, is expected to attract over 3,000 educators, technology coordinators, policy makers, and others to this global event. "This community is a rich one, with participants who work in many areas pulled together by a shared interest in using technical tools to create new forms of teaching and learning," says Program Co-chair Margaret Riel. "Come and share the excitement of being part of a conference that is working to change the way we think about both online and face-to-face conferencing=9Fand with it the way we teach and learn,"

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and SIG/Tel, promote appropriate uses of technology to support and improve teaching and learning. Representing more than 40,000 educators, ISTE is the largest professional society committed to the improvement of K-12 education through technology-based curriculum, instruction, and administrative services.
