BE A STUDENT FELLOW!

The ACM Computing Policy Conference Washington, DC, May 9-12, 1998

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Computing Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., May 9-12, 1998

co-Sponsored by the USACM Committee (the ACM U.S. Public Policy Committee) and SIGCAS, the ACM Special Interest Group on Computers and Society.

*What is a student fellow?

Fellows are computer science graduates or advanced undergraduate students or students in related disciplines who have an interest in social impact, ethical issues, and public policy.

A student fellow is a volunteer who helps run the conference in exchange for subsidized travel and the waiving of conference fees. In exchange, the student meets the top people in the field, gains valuable contacts, has fun, and learns.

* How many students will be chosen?

We estimate there will be 20 student fellows.

* What work will be done?

The twenty student volunteers will do the briefings books and help during the conference, doing everything from handling microphones, registering attendees, and recording sessions.

* How about this summer?

Three of the Student Fellows will also travel to Washington, D.C. this summer, 1997, for one week. This week has been tentatively scheduled as the week of July 27 to August 2. During this preparatory period, the three students will begin producing online and paper briefing books on the conference topics. The three students will have $500 paid toward their air fare and have room and board provided in D.C. These three students must also be available in May, 1998, for the Conference.

* How do I apply?

First, you should carefully read the CALL FOR PARTICIPATION of the conference. To receive a copy, please email marsha-w@uiuc.edu

You can then apply by submitting (via email) your letter of application explaining your credentials and interest in these topics. If you are interested in participating this summer, please submit your materials by May 12, 1997. The three recipients for the Summer 1997 awards will be made by May 21, 1997.

Other fellows must submit their applications by October 6, 1997.

We hope you'll want to join in this important event.
