C'punks,

Thanks to Charles Lewton and others who have complemented me on my Limbaugh call. It was easy; here's how to do it:

1) Listen to Limbaugh (or whomever you plan to call) for days or even weeks before you call. All these shows have their own history, culture and language. Before Rush took my call he talked to a guy who said he didn't listen often but then went on to call Rush and his callers, "right-wing wackos." Know who you are talking to before you go off half-cocked.

2) Come up with a different way of looking at your topic. Lots of folks called Rush to tell him what they thought the U.S. should do about terrorism. I told the screener what SHOULDN'T be done. It got his interest immediately. Rush puts callers who disagree with him to the front of the line. If you can, state your point in a way that nominally disagrees with Limbaugh, but when you get on, try to state you case in a way the agrees with Rush's philosphical leanings as much as possible. This will get you maximum air time.

3) Be passionate about your subject. By this I don't mean to froth at the mouth, but you should project some emotions. A dry, academic tone will get you nowhere. Name calling, though, is an absolute no-no. Passionate, but polite is best.

4) Write down key points so you don't forget what you want to say when you get on the line. Don't, read your statement, however. It sounds stilted, and it's really boring.

5) This is radio, NOT a phone conversation. Get to the point, stay on topic and keep it short and sweet. For god sake, don't ask Rush "how are you doin'?" "I can't believe I got through," "can I say hi to my mother?" etc.

6) Stand, or at least sit up straight when you get on the air. You will be nervous and good posture helps with breath control.

7) War dial. Continuous redialing when you get a busy signal will give you best chance of getting through. I have gotten through to Limbaugh's screener three times. It took 20-30 minutes of war dialing to get through each time.

I've gotten onto Limbaugh's show twice using these techniques. (The one time I got to the screener, but not on the show, was because I didn't follow my own rule #2.)

Go for it.
