WEBZINE99 ------------------------------------------------------- AN EXHIBITION, FORUM, AND PARTY FOR INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING ON THE INTERNET. CELEBRATE, DEMYSTIFY, AND EMPOWER WITH A WEBZINE-MAKING WORKSHOP, PERFORMANCES, INTERACTIVE INSTALLATIONS, AND SPEAKERS AND PANELISTS.
San Francisco, CA -- On July 24th, 1999, WEBZINE99 will celebrate the unwavering efforts of brave pioneers of independent creativity and provide a learning space where artists, writers, and programmers can participate in open communion about the current state of independent web publishing.
Featured keynote speakers are Phil Agre, associate professor of information studies at UCLA and editor of Red Rock Eater News Service, Larry Harvey, founder of the Burning Man Project, and V. Vale, founder of Search & Destroy and RE/search Publications. Also, Mayor Willie Brown of San Francisco, at a special address from the podium, will proclaim July 24th as "Internet Independence Day".
"I'm tired of the over-hyped buzz about venture capitalists and e-commerce startups." says event coordinator Ryan Junell. "The web is and can be *so much more than that. What we need as a culture is to get together and share what we know about this medium. I'm hoping that WEBZINE99 will generate some semblance of meaning now while this global medium is young."
"Independent media is what will save our asses from boredom. There is so much creative energy out there that isn't wrapped around a shopping cart or a search engine." says Eddie Codel, event manipulator. "This conference will hit you upside your head with compelling and revolutionary digital creations that have yet to be exploited on E-Bay."
The daylong event features speakers and panelists from many of the web's best underground productions. Workshops and on-site installations offer attendees the opportunity to participate in the creative process firsthand.
Tickets are only $7 if purchased online in advance http://www.tixtogo.com and $5 - $10 sliding scale at the door. Attendees under age 18 will be admitted free of charge. The event runs from 2pm to 2am on Saturday, July 24th. The venue is SOMARTS Cultural Center, 934 Brannan (b/w 8th and 9th) in San Francisco. Food and drinks will be available. Everyone welcome.
