I'm pretty excited about the commitment to the public good here at SI and I have funds from the Dean's office to do special recruiting of students who are interested in exploring careers that put information to work for communal and public purposes. We're running a special recruiting event on January 22, and we have some travel scholarships available. Deadline for applying is Dec. 15.

The Community Information Corps at the University of Michigan School of Information
In the widely touted "new economy," new roles are emerging for information specialists, people who can use information technology to meet the needs of individuals, communities, and organizations. Founded in 1996, the University of Michigan School of Information offers a master's degree program to train professionals in both the organizational and technical skills needed for these new jobs.
A growing number of our students are engaging in projects and exploring careers that put information to work for communal and public purposes. We call this group the Community Information Corps. This year, we have begun a special effort to attract students who will want to join this corps.
On January 22, 2000 we will hold a daylong program for prospective students in our master's program who have a commitment to service and activism. Up to 30 prospective students will receive TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND THIS EVENT. Interested prospective students should fill out the on-line application form availble at http://www.si.umich.edu/cic/.
Some of the projects students have engaged in over the last few years include:
-- Conducting cultural heritage preservation workshops on Native American reservations; -- Organizing archives of the Pan Africanist Congress in South Africa; -- Developing XML-based software to aid data sharing among human service organizations; -- Maintaining the Community Connector website, a resource for people using information systems to support geographic communities; -- Creating digital collections of cultural heritage materials; -- Developing tools to facilitate the creation of neighborhood photo directories; -- Prototyping software for electronic grocery ordering in poor neighborhoods.
After graduation, students may take jobs with community technology and media centers, non-profit technology assistance providers, public libraries, museums, commercial and non-profit local information providers, government agencies, international development organizations, foundations, and entrepreneurial social ventures.
