CNET | News.Context The pundits' take on the hottest trends and events effecting business and technology in the new economy.

November 16, 1999

Welcome to our newest offering: News.Context. In the news business there is nothing more important than being the first to break a hot story, getting a big scoop. But at CNET News.com we also believe in spotting a trend first, writing a thought-provoking piece on an issue that's not made it on to everyone else's radar, or doing some big-picture punditry on a topical event, putting as much emphasis on getting the "scoops of perception." In essence, putting things in context. We realize not all of you have the time to peruse our site everyday to keep up with all that is going on at CNET News.com. So we hope you will find this bi-weekly food-for-thought offering useful enough to remain a regular subscriber, and pass on to colleagues.

1. Don't let Taiwan shake you - by Phillip Rueppel Managing Director and Senior Computer Systems Analyst Deutsche Bank Alex, Brown

"The Taiwanese earthquake that caused significant damage to cities and sadly resulted in loss of life also sent shockwaves up and down the PC supply chain. " Phillip Rueppel takes a look at the not-so-devastating effects the recent Taiwan earthquake had on the U.S. PC industry. He cites the robust and flexible supply chain that market leaders such as Dell and Gateway have built. Although spot shortages may occur, for the most part the fabric of the industry remained relatively untorn.

2. The battle for the user's desktop - By James Preissler First Vice-President, Specializing as an Internet Analyst PaineWebber

"Advertising and e-commerce are the revenue, and ultimately the profit engines, of the Web. By 2002, the two are projected to reach $11 billion and $95 billion respectively, up from approximately $2 billion and $10 billion in 1998."

James Preissler speaks frankly about the current duopoly in Internet access, the fact that most users enter the Internet through either AOL- or Microsoft-controlled gateways. He believes AOL is successfully leveraging their dominance in this space. 3. Foreign Net deals come fast and furious - By Richard Peterson Chief Market Strategist Securities Data/Thompson Financial

"Last month's multibillion-dollar merger between Internet service providers MindSpring Enterprises and EarthLink Communications marked the largest U.S.-based Internet merger and acquisition deal in some time." Richard Peterson looks at the declining rate of and size of US mergers, the Earthlink-Mindspring merger aside. Foreign Net deals, conversely, have been coming on at a rapid pace, a fact many Americans have ignored. These international deals represent another wave of the globalization of the Net.
