``` [Herewith an example of the war of election e-mail. Jim Nicholson is a master of the twisted soundbite, and you can appreciate him at length here. The degree of projection in the current round of jargon is just breathtaking. Republicans in Congress have frittered away the last eight years chasing bogus scandals and attacking people. But everyone is sick of this, and so now their rap is that Clinton and Gore have been wasting time and creating a "bitter partisan tone" -- as if Clinton and Gore had impeached them! This is so weird. I mean, the algorithms by which they come up with their "strategies" are so mechanical. The fact that we're not laughing means that we are truly numb. Even people who don't agree with Clinton and Gore's policies, and there are many among us, should be concerned that this sort of primitive mind-game goes unchallenged in the media. I will leave the remainder of the rhetorical technology in this message -- and some of it is truly whacked -- as an exercise for the reader.]
Jim Nicholson Chairman, Republican National Committee
Notes on Al Gore's Reinvention Convention
Al Gore's efforts to reinvent his record continue. Today Democrats will attempt to recast Al Gore as a principled fighter. But Al Gore has repeatedly failed to fight for working families.
Despite nearly a decade of uninterrupted economic growth, Clinton-Gore have squandered bipartisan opportunities on health care, tax fairness, education, and other key issues. As a result, millions of Americans have been left behind.
The bitter partisan tone in Washington is a roadblock to reforms that would mean a healthy, more secure future for millions of American children. Millions of Americans face the fear of losing their health insurance and joining the ranks of the more than 44 million Americans who are uninsured today.
The number of Americans without health coverage has risen by eight million under Clinton-Gore. Clinton and Gore have had years of opportunities to give families better access to affordable health coverage, and they've squandered them.
Clinton and Gore have repeatedly killed bipartisan reforms that would make the tax code more reasonable and fair for middle-income families. For cynical political reasons, Al Gore and this administration have allowed grossly-unfair tax laws like the marriage penalty and the death tax to stand.
The marriage penalty slaps an estimated 25 million American families with an average of $1,400 a year in higher taxes simply for making the decision to get married. Legislation to eliminate the marriage penalty has repeatedly passed with bipartisan support, only to be terminated by the Clinton-Gore veto pen.
Gore opposes bipartisan education reforms that would help to close the widening achievement gap in education between disadvantaged students and their peers. Gore's own running mate supports some of these reforms - but he's being pressured to change his positions to allow Gore to continue his political attacks.
Americans want to change the tone in Washington so we can tackle the big issues facing our nation. No child should be left behind.
