CALL FOR PAPERS
desire, designum, design THE FOURTH EUROPEAN ACADEMY OF DESIGN CONFERENCE AVEIRO, PORTUGAL, 10th-12th APRIL 2001
Globalisation and the trends in communication technologies is changing the way people and organisations think and act. Design and designers contribute to the changing environment, in the ways in which they interpret and translate the material world. Design operates at both global, regional and local levels, at strategic and operational levels, in personal, social and environmental contexts. This conference is about setting the agenda for design research, for reflecting on design and design research now and in the future.
The themes for the conferences cover:
. the influencing and mediating nature of design between the user and society
. design as a strategic tool for groups, organisations, governments, education
. designs responsibility ethically, socially, etc
. practice centred design research (please see below for details of submitting practice-centred work)
What solutions can design offer for these issues? Papers are invited for submission, which consider design in scientific, educational, managerial, regional, industrial, future, cultural, system, visual research and environmental contexts. Papers should cover the following topics:
. design identities . design management . practice-led research . strategic design . design theory . eco/environmental design . design education . gender issues
The fourth European Academy of Design conference will be held at the Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal next Easter. This conference follows the success of the European Academy of Design's three previous international conferences, Design Interfaces (University of Salford, UK, Easter 1995), Design Contexts (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, Easter 1997), and Design Cultures (Sheffield Hallam University, UK, Easter 1999).
To propose a paper
Proposals should include the names of all authors together with institutional affiliations. Please indicate the name of the presenting author. Proposals should be one A4 page for refereeing. Brief biographies of the authors may be added on a second page. Proposals by email only, to: vas@ca.ua.pt. Please see below for details of submitting practice-centred work.
Deadlines 3 November 2000: Deadline for proposals. 15 December 2000: Authors notified. 9 February 2001: Final papers due.
On acceptance, authors will be invited to expand proposals for publication in the conference proceedings. Proceedings will be available at the conference. The working language of the conference is English.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS THAT INCLUDE PRACTICE-BASED RESEARCH OUTPUTS
The conference welcomes the submission of papers that consist of practice based research. Facilities will be made available during the conference to exhibit 2-D and 3-D examples of design research. This may take the form of photographs, printouts, drawings, models, software applications, prototypes or other examples of research work in progress. An exhibition area will be available during the conference to display this work.
What is Practice Based Research?
The term 'practice-based' research may require some clarification. For the purpose of this conference it refers to research that has involved the development of 2 and 3 dimensional artifacts in response to research questions. Essentially there is no difference between this category of research and any other formally constructed investigation. The work can not speak for its self. A written commentary is required to contextualise the work and to explain its significance and origin. The term 'practice based research' has in some contexts been used to describe professional practice. However the conference is only prepared to accept examples of practice based research that has been developed in response to a formal research enquiry.
What you have to provide
If you wish to submit a practice-based 'paper' you should include the following:
. A 300-word abstract detailing the research project. This should include a title, authors, affiliations, and synopsis of the research.
. Up to six 35mm slides of the work. The slides must be labeled clearly. You should provide a list of the slides on a separate sheet, including a caption and short description of the content with overall dimensions and approximate value for insurance purposes.
An exhibition space will be established during the conference for the presentation of practice based papers. This will include a seating area and projection equipment. The exhibition will remain in place throughout the conference. Exhibitors/presenters will be allocated a time for presenting their papers to fellow delegates. Presentations will take place in the exhibition area along side the exhibited work.
Details of the exhibition facilities (space, plinths, hanging system and lighting) will be communicated directly to the presenter of the work following acceptance of the paper for inclusion in the conference. Entries in the conference proceedings will include an illustrated abstract of the paper. Delegates presenting practice based papers will be responsible for transporting and hanging their work and removing the exhibits at the end of the conference. Insurance for the exhibition will be taken out by the conference organisers to cover accidental damage or theft, for the duration of the conference only.
