SUNDAY WORKSHOPS OCTOBER 29, 1995

INTERNATIONAL DATA SOURCES Laura Guy, Senior Librarian Gregory Haley, Head Data and Program Library Service Electronic Data Service University of Wisconsin-Madison Columbia University

This two-part workshop on international data sources can be taken as a full-day sequence or independently as half-day sessions. Each session will consist of a presentation and demonstration of the material, followed by hands-on practice. Laura Guy and Gregory Haley have worked with international data sources for over 20 years and are active members of the International Association for Social Science Information Services and Technology (IASSIST).

Part A: Strategies for Using International 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Data Available from IGOs Part A will emphasize international data from Inter-Governmental Organizations (IGOs), such as the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Data products will be reviewed and discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on advantages and disadvantages of each, comparisons of software, availability of other tools to enhance usage, and sources of assistance. Discussion will include a review of why various data are collected by different IGOs and differences in distribution methods. Handouts offering information on, and links to, the major IGOs and help resources will be provided.

Part B: Strategies for Navigating the Internet 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM to Locate and Access Data from Other Countries Part B will emphasize international data from foreign sources such as national archives and statistical agencies, including those of developing countries and non-western nations. Particular attention will be paid to developing search strategies for identifying data sources, access problems, comparability problems, differences in collection strategies, and accuracy concerns. Data types include public microdata as well as other statistical data. Discussion will include information on emerging on-line resources via WWW, gopher, etc. Lists of contacts from whom to obtain further assistance will be provided.

US ECONOMIC DATA Tom Bell, Survey Statistician Economic Planning and Coordination Division Bureau of the Census

This session will provide in-depth information on the economic data resources of the Census Bureau. Tom Bell is a survey statistician with the Bureau of the Census in the Economic Planning and Coordination Division. He has been with the Census Bureau since 1983 in various capacities related to the economic censuses and surveys and is currently a statistician for the County Business Patterns data series.

Economic Data at the Census Bureau 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM

This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of the data products available from the economic censuses and surveys. The overview will describe data product content and format. Participants will be provided with materials for use after the workshop that will enable them to identify and acquire appropriate economic data. In addition, the workshop will describe the Census Bureau's register of businesses, which is the foundation for the economic censuses and surveys. Discussion will help attendees interpret economic data, explore the potential uses of the business register for special tabulations, and understand the ramifications of combining Census Bureau economic data with other resources.

Each workshop is priced at $60 for APDU members, $75 for non-members. Parts A and B of the International Data Sources workshop are $60 each ($75 each for non-members). Lunch is not provided between Sunday workshops. Use the registration form at the end of this message to assure your place at the Sunday workshops.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND APDU95?

As someone who works with public data, you know that change has become the operative word. Policies are changing at the federal, state and local levels. The tools and options for dissemination of data are changing on a daily basis. Our roles as data collectors, producers, disseminators and users are changing to meet new demands, new environments, and new constraints. Through workshops, plenary and breakout sessions, showcases, and vendor displays, APDU95 will provide you with the information and tools you need to navigate these changes.- Explore the shifting roles of data access intermediaries and end-users and what part we can play in the policy and technical developments that shape those roles. * Talk with the statistical policy makers and public data producers about the present and the future. * Find out about the present state of statistical policy and where it's headed. * Discuss the implication of these changes for producers, disseminators and users of public data. * Get a hands-on look at finding aids and access tools at the Agency Showcase and at daily vendor displays.

In addition to the traditional APDU literature table, this year's conference will feature member displays. The displays will be available for viewing during all break periods. Make it a point to check on what's new and interesting from members.
