postscript from Joe Bates
``` Date: Fri, 20 May 94 01:03:26 -0400 From: Joseph_Bates@WIZARD.OZ.CS.CMU.EDU Subject: Bates on CBN's interview of Bates
For my friends and interested others, I'd like to comment very briefly on the events leading up to my appearance on CBN earlier this week.
I have no affiliation with CBN. I have some general familiarity with their activities. A number of months ago the Carnegie Mellon public relations office asked me to do an interview with a reporter from CBN. After some hesitation, I agreed. The interview took place in a CMU office. The interviewer was exceptionally polite and friendly.... astoundingly so. We discussed the Oz project's work on believable agents, and we looked at the Woggles. The reporter understood the work rather well. I was told the interview would be reported as news, in particular as an introduction to an area of science and intellectual inquiry. I didn't see the broadcast piece, and so leave it to you to decide if this was so.
It has been educational to me that this piece seems to have attracted more attention than work presented at AAAI and CogSci conferences, in archival journals, and in popular sources such as Science News, Newsweek, and newspapers. Maybe we should change the spin of our conference papers.
