Welcome to the University of Houston Libraries' PACS-P List

Overview

Four electronic serials are distributed on the PACS-P list: The Public-Access Computer Systems Review (a refereed electronic journal), Public-Access Computer Systems News (an electronic newsletter), Current Cites (an electronic newsletter), and the LITA Newsletter (an electronic version of the print newsletter). (These publications are also distributed on pacs-l@uhupvm1.uh.edu.) PACS-P serves over 2,400 users in 51 countries.

The Public-Access Computer Systems Review (PACS Review) is an electronic journal about end-user computer systems in libraries. It is distributed at no charge on the Internet and other computer networks. The journal publishes papers on topics such as campus-wide information systems, CD-ROM LANs, document delivery systems, electronic publishing, expert systems, hypermedia and multimedia systems, locally mounted databases, network-based information resources and tools, and online catalogs. It is published by the University of Houston Libraries.

The PACS Review was established in 1989. The first issue was published in 1990. The journal became refereed in 1991; the first refereed paper was published in 1992.

The PACS Review has two sections: Communications (papers selected by the Editor-in-Chief and the Associate Editor, Communications) and Refereed Articles (papers that are peer reviewed by Editorial Board members using a double-blind review procedure). The PACS Review also includes columns and reviews of books, network resources, and software. It is published on an irregular basis.

Charles W. Bailey, Jr., University of Houston Libraries, is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal; Leslie Pearse, OCLC, is the Associate Editor, Columns; and Dana Rooks, University of Houston Libraries, is the Associate Editor, Communications. The journal has a eighteen-member Editorial Board.

The PACS Review is copyrighted; however, copying is permitted for noncommercial use by academic computer centers, computer conferences, individual scholars, and libraries. Authors retain the copyright to their articles, and they give the University of Houston the nonexclusive right to publish the articles in the journal and in future publications. Libraries are authorized to add the journal to their collections at no cost. The journal is cataloged on OCLC and RLIN; its ISSN is 1048-6542.

Articles are stored as individual files on the list server, and an annotated table of contents for each issue is sent out as an e-mail message to all PACS-P users. After looking over the table of contents, users can retrieve article files of interest. Back issues are also available on the University of Houston Libraries' Gopher server.

The first three volumes of The Public-Access Computer Systems Review are also available in book form from the American Library Association's Library and Information Technology Association (LITA).

The price of each printed volume is $20 ($17 for LITA members). All three volumes can be ordered as a set for $45 (indicate that you want the PACS Review set, order number 7712-X). To order, contact: ALA Publishing Services, Order Department, 50 East Huron Street, Chicago, IL 60611-2729, (800) 545-2433.

Volume one has a special section on SPIRES that describes how this powerful system is being used for locally mounted databases and campus-wide information systems, plus an in-depth symposium about staffing issues and public-access computer systems. It also has articles about Carnegie Mellon University's Library Information System II (and other innovative library automation systems), text management software, CD-ROM LAN implementations and network licensing agreements, Z39.50, and other topics.

Volume two has a special section about major electronic serials on networks that includes papers by the editors and publishers of EJournal, The Electronic Journal of Communication, the Journal of the International Academy of Hospitality Research, New Horizons in Adult Education, the Newsletter on Serials Pricing Issues, Postmodern Culture, and PSYCOLOQUY as well as a guide to the important LISTSERV software. It also has a substantial symposium about network-based information resources and scholarly communication, plus a paper on machine-readable data files in libraries.

Volume three has papers on campus-wide information systems and tools, including UC Berkeley's Infocal Campus Information Service, HYTELNET, LIBS Internet Access Software, and nonbibliographic applications of Z39.50. It includes an in-depth investigation of the future of electronic publishing, a paper on The Online Journal of Current Clinical Trials, and a bibliography about electronic publishing on networks. It also contains papers on reshaping library services and staffing to support emerging electronic information systems; the Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry, and Education; and search failures in information retrieval systems.

Volume four includes papers on the Internet Gopher software, virtual library issues, the dangers of technolust and visionary predictions, information policies and electronic information resources, competencies for electronic information services, a model copyright policy for universities, an electronic document delivery project (OJAC), and the University of Pennsylvania's PennInfo CWIS.

All four volumes include columns. Topics covered include artificial intelligence, cataloging Internet resources, the Common Command Language, copyright and digital media, enhanced OPACs, help systems, hypermedia, Internet resources, multimedia networking, online catalog design, and USMARC format integration.
