Minnesota E-Democracy 1996 - U.S. Senate E-Debate Planned!!!
---
Like Minnesota E-Democracy 1994, the 1996 effort will focus on helping provide voters information on candidates and important election issues. Detailed non-partisan campaign information will be compiled and be presented to help citizens get involved in campaigns and the election process.
A U.S. Senate E-Debate(s) is currently being developed and a number of potential candidates have agreed to participate. As with the 1994 E-Debates, the Minnesota League of Women Voters will co-sponsor the debate along with other on-line networks and media organizations.
If your organization is interested in helping co-sponsor this debate(s), please send a note to the Minnesota E-Democracy Steering Committee at: e-democracy@freenet.msp.mn.us
Minnesota Issues Forum
---
Minnesota E-Democracy's primary goal is to develop an information infrastructure that will be used to improve citizen participation and the election process. Along with the open and unmoderated MN-POLITICS e-mail forum, the new list called MN-FORUM is under development.
MN-FORUM will blend the advantages of e-mail participation with the World-Wide-Web. Civic and political organizations will be invited to host well planned and moderated public on-line conferences. Once MN-FORUM is launched, one or two groups a month will each sponsor a public on-line conference on an issue important to Minnesotans. Announcements of new conferences will be distributed via the MN-DEMOCRACY e-mail list and be publicized through the media in Minnesota.
To receive future updates on this new project, please subscribe to MN-DEMOCRACY. If your organization is interested in sponsoring an on-line public conference, please send an e-mail message describing your organization's interest to: e-democracy@freenet.msp.mn.us
Minnesota Politics Forum
---
The MN-POLITICS, the primary interactive e-mail forum sponsored by Minnesota E-Democracy, has close to 300 subscribers. Interesting discussions from diverse perspectives on Minnesota politics and issues make it one of the most active and useful on-line discussion forums in the state.
All of the previous postings to MN-POLITICS are available on the Twin Cities Free-Net at: http://freenet.msp.mn.us/govt/e-democracy/
To subscribe to MN-POLITICS, send an e-mail message to:
Majordomo@MR.Net
In the text, area write:
subscribe mn-politics
Note: MN-POLITICS is an open and umoderated forum with average daily message volume of 2-7 messages with spikes of conversation. Most list subscribers are selective in what they read - and for those of you who are new to e-mail forums - it is O.K. to use the delete key. Please read the full list description the you will receive upon subscribing.
Minnesota E-Democracy Vision
---
When Minnesota E-Democracy launched its WWW server early in the 1994 election season, it was likely the first election WWW server in the world. We found that the interactive portion and regional focus of our 1994 effort gave the project life and sense of meaning. Later in the fall, about a dozen efforts like Project Vote Smart, a national League of Women Voters effort, and a California effort also helped lead the way. Now there are hundreds of election and candidate sites on the Internet.
Minnesota E-Democracy continues to be an all volunteer effort that depends on the technical support of such organizations as the Twin Cities Free-Net, the Minnesota Regional Network, and the Minneapolis Telecommunications Network. Minnesota E-Democracy is a vehicle for "competitive collaboration" where a number of online and civic initiatives can come together and build an online civic space for the benefit and use of all Minnesotans.
The project strives to show the world that Minnesota can be a humble leader of real citizen-based electronic democracy! Perhaps the goal [:-)] to have Minnesota be viewed in relation to electronic democracy as Athens is to democracy [:-)] is something we can work toward. While none of us will be around 2000 years from now to judge our place in history, at least our work will be.
