Internet Multicasting Service

``` Date: Mon, 21 Mar 1994 04:00:02 -0500 From: Carl Malamud To: Announcements Subject: End of First Year
The Internet Multicasting Service is pleased to announce that we've survived our first year of operation without facing bankruptcy, a grand jury indictment, or any other unpleasant experiences. We're also pleased to announce a few new developments:
1) Our WWW server is available at the following URL: http://www.town.hall.org/ We currently have keyword search on SEC documents and full text search of the U.S. Patent 1994 databases up and running, plus an interface to The Phone Company. Expect much more! 2) Our Gopher server is now available at the following URL: gopher://gopher.town.hall.org/
We currently have access to Federal Reserve Board documents up and running and will soon provide gateways into the SEC and Patent archives. 3) Our WAIS server is now available on wais.town.hall.org. The Patent .src file is at the end of this document and will be registered in the directory of servers. Thanks to WAIS Inc. for the server software. 4) We are beginning to stamp all our text files with RSA/RIPEM digital signatures. You can find our public key at the this document or through a finger request to town.hall.org. Look in the ftp://town.hall.org/edgar/docs/ directory for examples of stamped files.
The Internet Multicasting Service applauds the farsighted moves by RSA Data Security Inc. to make this crucial technology available worldwide. To learn more about RSA digital signatures, send e-mail to rsaref@rsa.com. During the next month, we will continue to multicast daily news from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and will do periodic National Press Club Luncheons as announced on SD. We will not be releasing audio files until May so that we can prepare for our next year on the air. A few of the things you should expect over the next few months:
1) From May 4-6 we will work with volunteers from all over the world and with major figures from the "real" media to put the first cyberstation on the air live from INTEROP. More news on this exciting event will be announced over the next few weeks. 2) Our WWW server will continue to be enhanced and will support a "redirect" home page for the radio station. This will allow you to browse our announcements and, when you click on a file, we will find the "closest" instance of that file to you and send you back the appropriate URL. Expect other fun WWW home pages including the Red Sage restaurant! 3) We will begin generating program announcements in MIME and and HTML formats to allow automated processing into mirrored home pages and other applications. 4) We will be making direct connections to major Internet access points to allow cleaner distribution of our data. We will also make a major effort to work with network service providers to provide a "railroad" for the orderly distribution of our data. More news on this in a few months. 5) We will continue to expand our presence on the Multicast Backbone in a way that makes appropriate use of this research environment. 6) We will continue to develop special events ("cheap stunts") that show innovative ways to make use of the Internet infrastructure. 7) We will continue to try and find data archives that can be put onto the Internet. Expect the Federal Election Commission database, a series of photographic archives, and anything else we can scrounge up. 8) We will provide more coverage of important Congressional Hearings, major conferences, and other events of special interest to the Internet community.
The Internet Multicasting Service is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation with studios in the National Press Building in Washington, D.C. Our staff now numbers 12 including the fabulous Tungsten Macaque, our house band.
The Internet Multicasting Service is made possible only through the generous support of our sponsors. We are grateful for the farsighted thinking of these corporations and government groups. We'd also like to thank you, our viewers and listeners, for your patient support as we grope with what it takes to become a permanent source of new data for this new medium. As you've learned, this isn't your typical radio station and our goal is to keep it that way!
Major support for the Internet Multicasting Service is provided by Sun Microsystems, O'Reilly & Associates, and Interop Company. Additional support is provided by Harper Collins, Persoft, and WAIS Inc. Support for the SEC EDGAR database is provided by the National Science Foundation under a grant to New York University. Network connectivity for the Internet Multicasting Service is provided by UUNET Technologies and by MFS Datanet. Rebroadcast of National Press Club events are made possible through an agreement with the Board of Governors.
Thanks to everybody and get yourself ready for even more data!
