INTCAR-L - computer assisted reporting outside the United States

Introducing INTCAR-L, a small, new listserv on computer assisted reporting outside the United States.
---
Friends --
We've been asking around, and there seems to be considerable interest in establishing some sort of listserv focusing on the particular needs of journalists and journalism professors outside of the United States interested in computer assisted journalism. This new list should be multi-lingual, for example, but employ English as a common tongue to the extent that it is useful; the list should specialize in resources concerning news outside the US; and it should be cognizant of the fact that in much of the world journalistic use of computer resources is just beginning.
We've started a small, informal listserv here at American University to make a contribution to meeting these needs. The idea is to nuture this project over the summer and see if it actually takes off. I expect only a relative handful of postings per week during the summer. Among our first postings will be the final drafts of the Reporters' Guides to the Internet that AU students circulated for comment in "first draft" form about two months ago, plus news concerning Latin American and European Internet resources and guides to using IXRC resources to gather news during emergencies and disasters.
This new list is not intended to compete with CARR-L, net-happenings, the various JOURNET lists, or other existing lists. It will selectively forward material from those lists to share with readers abroad, just as those lists regularly borrow from one another today.
Journalists and journalism professors from the U.S. are of course most welcome to participate in this project; in fact, the more the merrier. Please try to focus your postings on international CARR resources and issues, though, in order to reduce duplication with other lists.
We are particularly eager to contact journalists, professional organizations of journalists, and journalism professors outside the US. Over the long run, we would like to:
-- encourage distribution of Internet training materials and resource guides in languages other than English;
-- help journalists worldwide to locate computer resources in their home countries;
-- share story ideas and story projects where appropriate; and
-- do our bit to facilitate development of democratic communication and information resources throughout the world.
Thanks for your interest. Welcome aboard!
Christopher Simpson
