HandsNet at a Glance

HandsNet is a national, nonprofit information and communications network. Founded in 1987, it links more than 3,000 public interest and human service organizations across the United States. The network offers members enhanced communications through electronic mail, access to interactive public and private on-line libraries and opportunities for collaboration and collective action on a range of social and economic justice issues.

Members include national research centers, community-based service providers, local and state government agencies, public policy advocates, legal services programs,foundations and grassroots coalitions. HandsNet s membership and information forums are dynamic, with new organizations continually joining the network and new issues being covered in the information forums.

Presently, HandsNet s substantive focus includes:

AIDS Prevention, Treatment, Policy and Funding (under development) Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Children, Youth & Family Issues Health Care Reform Housing & Community Development Hunger and Nutrition Policy Legal Services Poverty Issues (generally) Rural Poverty & Sustainable Development Southern Africa Nongovernmental Organization Network (SANGONet)

Private forums within HandsNet, used primarily for intra-organizational communication, are operated by the YWCA of the USA, Habitat for Humanity, the National Council of Hispanic Health and Human Service Organizations, the National Council of State Housing Agencies and other national, regional and state organizations.

HandsNet is the most comprehensive single source of human services news, policy, program, legal and resource information. With more than 150 national clearinghouses, research and advocacy organizations serving as regular information providers to the network, members not only have direct access to timely information and research, but to the authors, researchers, policy- and news-makers themselves.

The network offers daily news briefs from the national press and wire services, public policy alerts, updates and analysis, research findings and statistics, notices of legal and administrative actions, abstracts and full-text of key new studies and reports, Federal Register notices and information on available resources and funding. HandsNet also offers electronic mail, an Internet mail gateway to other networks, a fax gateway and binary file transfer. Software features include icon-based point and click technology, full-text Boolean search, quick on-line connection, automated mail and search options and tools to highlight newly added information.

HandsNet is headquartered in Cupertino, California. Its staff includes fourteen full-time professionals, highly experienced in nonprofit, human services communications and networking. HandsNet is financed by subscriber revenues and development contracts and grants from foundation and corporate sponsors.
