Overview

Agre's time at UC San Diego was a pivotal transition period in which his focus shifted decisively from AI systems work to critical theory of technology. This is when his most methodologically important work emerged — the articulation of critical technical practice as a named approach, and the capture model as a framework for understanding digital surveillance.

It was also during this period that he began the Red Rock Eater News Service (1993), which would become the primary vehicle for his public intellectual engagement.

Key Developments

  • Articulation of "critical technical practice" as methodology
  • Publication of "Surveillance and Capture" (1994)
  • Book manuscript for "Computation and Human Experience" (published 1997)
  • Launch of the Red Rock Eater News Service (1993)
  • Shift from computer science department to interdisciplinary positioning
