Edgar Knapp

``` The other day I sent a message to RRE about the mailing list for Edgar Knapp's letters about life in jail. The person who sent it to me was under the impression that the message was meant for wide distribution, and indeed it would seem that the people running the list had failed (through no fault of their own) to consider whether they should control participation in the list. Peter Magnusson corresponded with them and summarizes his findings in the enclosed note. (I have double-checked the information with one of Knapp's list maintainers as well.) The bottom line is that Knapp's list is not public but that individuals with good reasons are welcome to write to him on paper.
Lately RRE has been moving toward a greater proportion of "private" messages and a lesser proportion of messages filtered from public mailing lists. This is not a conscious policy decision; it's just a trend. I don't know if the trend will continue, but I do know that it makes much more work than I had anticipated, since I have to try much harder to verify that the messages I get can really be distributed widely. I'm not interested in spending a lot of hours working on RRE, so we'll have to see what happens.
Hi!
Yesterday I received a forwarded mail regarding Edgar Knapp. Curious to hear his future "Life in Jail" diary entries, and touched by his tragedy, I tried to be added to the mailing list that distributes his writing.
It turned out to be difficult to find information on how to do so, or even whether people not acquainted with Edgar are welcome to join or not. Eventually I got hold of someone who gave the "real story", and I thought I'd immediately share this information with you. Apologies if you already know this.
Edgar Knapp does not have access to e-mail. He writes the letters, friends type them up, and they are sent from his account to a mailing list. Somehow the first letter reached people not on this list.
Edgar has decided that everyone interested in receiving the letters should write to him via US-mail to:
Edgar Knapp 2640 Duncan Road Lafayette IN 47904
and give him some idea why they are interested in the letters.
(Note that any letters sent to Edgar will be opened and possibly read by authorities prior to delivery.)
His original reason for writing the letters was to stay in touch with friends and people that have helped him in the last months.
His first entry did, indeed, give the impression that he wanted a broad distribution of his e-mail diary, and people have apparently acted on this impression. However, I now assume that Edgar doesn't want his mailing-list to be viewed as yet another cool attraction on the net (although I have not received information to that effect). Therefore, until we hear otherwise from Edgar, I hope everyone will act responsibly with this information.
Regards,
Peter Magnusson ```
