Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 20:51:44 -0500 (CDT) From: rparry@ix.netcom.com (Robert Parry) Subject: Dark Side of Rev. Moon: Hooking George Bush

The new issue of The Consortium, No. 43, is on the Web.

The lead story recounts how the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed Korean messiah, has hooked ex-President George Bush and pulled him into the Unification Church's mysterious business dealings in South America.

Bush went to work for Moon, despite Moon's virulent anti-Americanism. In recent speeches, Moon has denounced the United States as the "land of Satan" and vowed that his movement will "digest" any American insisting on keeping his or her individuality. Moon told one follower that even hamburgers are evil because they are associated with Satanic America.

One reason for Bush's flackery is money, with estimates of Bush's pay-off running into the millions of dollars. But Bush also may be lining up Moon's deep-pocket influence in conservative circles for the expected presidential run of Texas Gov. George W. Bush. That way the Bush-Moon alliance, which began at the start of the Reagan-Bush administration in 1981, could reach into the next century.

The issue's second story describes how Moon's controversial recruitment techniques drove one New Jersey mother to the brink of a nervous breakdown and lured her son into a life that the young man now denounces as a four-year deception.

The Moon stories are the opening of an investigative series about the Unification Church and its secret influence in American politics. The Consortium is edited by Robert Parry, who broke many of the Iran-contra stories for The Associated Press, Newsweek and PBS Frontline.
