SENDER: Ian Bell
I received, via Stephen Barnett, at Adelaide, a copy of a review of our Cloud Identification program. This had, in turn come from Doug Walker on SAIS-L Unfortunately my e-mail address is given wrongly:
it should be I.Bell@BoM.gov.au (not I.Bell@MoM.gov.au).
I have also included some extra information below as to how people can obtain the program. As I'm not aware of the nature of the group I don't wish to flood them with irrelevant material. Most of the other programs on CALMET are more technical and specific.

CLOUDS IDENTIFICATION TRAINING MODULE
Thank you for your enquiry regarding this program. It requires an IBM compatible computer running Microsoft Windows in enhanced mode with a SuperVGA monitor set up as 640x480 resolution and 256 colours. The images in the program will not display properly if your computer is not in this configuration.
The module comprises five 1.44 Mb floppy disks which include an automated self-extraction and setup program. It is freely copyable for educational, non-profit purposes. It is available in a boxed format from:
Bureau of Meteorology Publications GPO Box 1289K Melbourne 3001 Australia.
Its cost is A$20 posted within Australia or A$27 overseas.
It, and other programs, may also be obtained electronically from the CALMET address below.
CALMET Electronic Data Bank
The Computer Aided Learning (CAL) Working Group of the Standing Conference of Heads of Training Institutions of National Meteorological Services (SCHOTI) , through Charles Duncan at the University of Edinburgh, runs an electronic mail service. Messages sent to CALMET are automatically broadcast to all subscribers via e-mail.
The computer server also contains a directory of programs and other information, such as the CALMet93 Conference Proceedings. These may be accessed over the Internet via anonymous ftp.

Meteorological Images CD-ROM
When creating a conventional training lesson it is useful to have access to text and diagrams for photocopying or making transparencies. For CAL development it would be helpful to have access to photographs, images, diagrams and animations in digital form. To meet this need the CAL Working Group is preparing a CD-ROM which will contain images that members of the meteorological community provide. If you have any digital imagary that is meteorological in nature and that you are prepared to share with others please e-mail to calmet-request as above. The CD-ROM will be available at cost for all to use for non-profit educational purposes.
CALMet Conferences
The First International Conference on Computer Aided Learning and Distance Learning in Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography, co-sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and WMO, was held in Boulder, Colorado, USA in July 1993. Its theme was "Getting It Right" and there were approximately 90 participants from 26 countries. As well as nearly 40 papers there were 4 popular workshops for those new to the field. These were: "The fundamentals of distance learning, including multimedia, CAL, teleconferencing and other media," "The instructional design process," "Designing effective instruction," and "Taking the mystery out of multimedia authoring systems."
Not only did the papers cover a wide range of topics ranging from instructional design theory, through numerous examples of CAL applications, to how to evaluate their effectiveness, but many participants said that this was the best conference they had ever attended.
The second conference, "CALMet95", will be held in Toulouse, France, and hosted by Ecole Nationale de la Meteorologie (ENM), Meteo-France, from 17 - 21 July 1995. For further information contact: Joel.HOFFMAN@meteo.fr
