The new issue of The Consortium, No. 56, has been posted on the Web.

The lead story examines the facts behind Hillary Clinton's allegation of a "vast right-wing conspiracy" aimed at bringing down the Clinton Presidency. Though Mrs. Clinton's assertion has been mocked by the mainstream pundits, there is reality behind her concern.

Our article suggests, however, that this is less a conspiracy in an X-Files sense than an American-style coup d'etat, with Clinton's enemies methodically moving their allies into strategic positions to destroy him when the time is right. The American Right has learned well the lessons of the CIA.

The second story reviews the substance of the new CIA report on Nicaraguan contra drug trafficking. Deep inside the report -- ignored by the Big Media -- are major concessions about the guilt of both the contra movement and the CIA's cover-up of drug evidence. The story finds that investigative report Gary Webb actually understated some of the contra-cocaine evidence.
