CANADA'S COALITION FOR PUBLIC INFORMATION IS SPONSORING DIGITAL KNOWLEDGE II: BUILDING ELECTRONIC SPACE FOR COMMUNITY PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATION AN OPEN THINK TANK ON PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATION: OUR COMMUNITY'S NETWORKED HEALTH CARE FUTURE - Prospects, Problems and Potential

LOCATION: Toronto (specific location to be determined) The conference will also be offered to 'Virtual Participants' using Internet Relay Chat (IRC).

Date: October 16 and 17, 1997 (Alternate dates Oct.23 and 24, depending on availability of facilities).

CONFERENCE GOAL:

To bring together experts in electronic health information services with community information and communications experts to share their knowledge and expertise. The conference will begin to define key policy issues and the digital content that should be provided through a community health information service. It will identify the mechanisms that will provide an health information safety-net, so as to prevent the development of a socio-economic split in the provision of health information in Canada.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES:- To sketch a blueprint for future public health electronic community services, resources, and policies.- To spotlight key public policy issues of privacy, equitable access, and content that will shape our future networked health services and information.- To examine the public policy issues around providing community electronic space for public health information that will lead to a healthy, knowledge society.- To talk about the health information people need.- To make sure volunteers and national health associations are on the agenda and have resources to contribute to the content and services of our health information networks.- To define a health information safety-net to prevent the development of information haves and have nots in Canada's healthy, knowledge society.- To provide a consultation forum for the "Canadian Health Iway" as put forward by CANARIE.

THE CHALLENGE:

To provide each citizen with access to the body of health advice, information and diagnostics available through existing electronic networks.

To provide a community infrastructure that brings a new focus to existing health-related initiatives.

To use available technology and content and to prepare for a wide band-width tomorrow that will better serve every Canadian community.

CALL FOR PAPERS:

DIGITAL KNOWLEDGE II, the annual conference of Canada's Coalition for Public Information, is a major international event for public policy experts and public interest groups dealing with the issues of access and privacy relating to information highway and internet technologies and applications. DIGITAL KNOWLEDGE II will address the public policy issues around building community electronic space for public health information in order to develop healthy knowledge communities. Multiple conference tracks will address critical issues.

The Program Committee solicits abstracts of papers and suggestions for targeted sessions or panels which describe innovative developments, encourage vigorous discussion and further our understanding of community public space for health information.

The following list of topics is indicative of the scope of the conference and should not be interpreted as limiting submissions.

TOPICS:

Public Policy on health information and: access privacy community electronic space the "Canadian Health Iway"* poverty, the biggest cause of illness (health/knowledge haves vs. health/knowledge have nots). individual responsibility for health. connectivity to health information professionalism: help or hindrance liability* who/how/what re:the organization of public health information alternative health, information services free vs. fee intellectual property/copyright self-diagnosis and self treatment the economics of health information innovative technologies and health information* cross border issuesSUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES

Register your interest in contributing to the DIGITAL KNOWLEDGE II program by sending an abstract or proposal by e-mail to cpi@web.net. You will receive complete details of the submission procedure and periodic updates from the Program Committee.- The official language of the conference is English.- Abstracts of papers and proposals for sessions or panels should be submitted in plain ASCII by February 15, 1997 to cpi@web.net- Each abstract or proposal must contain a title or topic, the name(s) of the author(s), organizational affiliation(s), address(es), telephone and fax number(s), and e-mail address(es), and must identify a single point of contact if more than one author is listed.- Each abstract should be between one and two pages in length and contain a list of key words or topics.- Each panel or session proposal should indicate and justify the theme of the proposed session and include the names of suggested contributors.- Selected submissions will be invited to contribute full papers. Final selection will be based on full papers.
