The Donella Meadows Institute is the nonprofit organization that carries forward Donella Meadows's work following her death in February 2001. It is the renamed successor to the sustainability-institute that Meadows founded in 1996 in Hartland, Vermont. The renaming honored her legacy while maintaining the organizational continuity she had built.

diana-wright, who had been a key staff member at the Sustainability Institute, continued working through the Donella Meadows Institute and was the primary figure responsible for completing thinking-in-systems-2008 from Meadows's draft manuscript. The institute's most consequential act in the posthumous-influence-2001-present era was enabling that book's publication by chelsea-green-publishing in 2008 — seven years after Meadows's death.

The institute's programs include the "Leverage Points" leadership development program (named for leverage-points-paper-1999), educational resources based on thinking-in-systems-2008, and curriculum development for systems thinking in K-12 and higher education. These programs represent the applied pedagogical mission that Meadows pursued throughout the dartmouth-and-global-citizen-1972-2001 era, continued institutionally after her death.

The institute also maintains and disseminates the global-citizen-columns, Meadows's archived newspaper writing, which now functions as an educational resource demonstrating how systems thinking applies to everyday policy and social issues. The columns — written over sixteen years from 1985 to 2001 — are accessible to general audiences and serve as entry points to Meadows's ideas for readers who encounter thinking-in-systems-2008 as their first contact.

The balaton-group, which Meadows convened annually for nearly two decades, continues under the institute's organizational umbrella, sustaining the international network of systems thinkers and sustainability researchers she built during the balaton-and-sustainability-indicators-1982-2001 era.

The institute's location in the same Vermont community as dartmouth-college and chelsea-green-publishing maintains the regional ecosystem of sustainability-oriented institutions that characterized Meadows's working life. Its continued existence ensures that the sustainability-institute's applied research agenda — indicators-of-sustainability-1998, the state-of-the-village-report, and the broader sustainability indicators work — remains an active program rather than a historical archive.
