Written by cecelia-kilian, Deming's personal assistant of 39 years, this is the only authorized biography. Kilian had unique access to Deming's papers, correspondence, and personal recollections. The book is particularly valuable for coverage of Deming's early life, his education at the University of Wyoming and Yale, and his formative years at USDA and the Census Bureau — periods often glossed over in accounts that focus on Japan and Ford. Contains a bibliography of Deming's publications (pp. 346-356) that is the most complete published list. Also includes important primary documents: the 1950 Japan lecture text, a proposed Code of Ethics for Statisticians, and notes on quality care in medicine. Full text available via Archive.org controlled digital lending (note: pp. 344-345 physically missing from scan).
