The Progression: Uncertainty to Chaos

Boyd's Causal Chain

Boyd described the collapse of moral cohesion as a deterministic progression, not a random failure:

Uncertainty → Doubt → Mistrust → Confusion → Disorder → Fear → Panic → Chaos

This is not poetry. It is a causal chain. Each psychological state produces the next. The progression runs from the mildest disruption toward total collapse.

How It Works

  • Uncertainty: The official frame doesn't perfectly fit observable reality. Members notice discrepancies but haven't yet formed conclusions.
  • Doubt: Repeated mismatch produces active questioning. The frame is no longer automatically trusted.
  • Mistrust: Doubt extends to the people and institutions maintaining the frame. Not just 'the narrative is wrong' but 'the people telling us this are lying.'
  • Confusion: Without a trusted frame, members cannot make sense of incoming information. Decision-making degrades.
  • Disorder: Confused members act incoherently. Coordination breaks down. Actions contradict each other.
  • Fear: Disorder without resolution produces fear. The coalition cannot predict what will happen next, including to its own members.
  • Panic: Fear accelerates into reactive, uncoordinated action. The progression self-amplifies.
  • Chaos: Total collapse of coordinated function.
  • The Weapon and the Defense

The progression can be weaponized (FUD: inject uncertainty, accelerate to doubt and mistrust) or defended against (maintain harmony and a grand ideal that holds the progression at uncertainty).

A coalition with strong moral cohesion — harmony, shared grand ideal, moral authority — absorbs uncertainty without it metastasizing into doubt. The frame holds. The progression stalls.

A coalition with weak moral cohesion — collapsing narrative, exposed hypocrisy, defecting allies — cannot hold at uncertainty. Each exposure accelerates the progression.

    The FUD Wars Application

Microsoft's strategy against Linux was a textbook application of this progression:
  • Inject uncertainty: 'Will Linux scale for enterprise?'
  • Breed doubt: 'Is open source legally safe? What about IP contamination?'
  • Create mistrust: 'Who is really behind this? Is it anti-American?'
  • The goal was to hold enterprise buyers at doubt and mistrust — never letting them reach the confirmation that would collapse the FUD.

It failed because the open source coalition had a grand ideal that matched observable reality. Developers could see the code. The licenses were clear. The community was real. The FUD couldn't create sustained mismatch because the truth was verifiable.

    Minneapolis 2026

The administration attempted to run this progression against the Minneapolis coalition:
  • Inject uncertainty: 'Are the protesters really peaceful?'
  • Breed doubt: 'Could some of them be dangerous?'
  • Create mistrust: 'Are outside agitators involved?'
  • Simultaneously, the documentation infrastructure ran the progression inside the administration's coalition:

  • Uncertainty: 'The videos don't quite match our claims'
  • Doubt: 'Maybe we can't control this narrative'
  • Mistrust: 'Our own allies are questioning us'
  • Confusion: 'We can't maintain a coherent story'
  • Disorder: 'The commander was removed'
  • Minneapolis held at uncertainty. The administration traveled toward disorder.
