Personal Kanban (2011) by jim-benson and Tonianne DeMaria Barry extended the kanban-method's core principles — visualize-workflow and wip-limits — to personal productivity. Published by Modus Cooperandi Press, the book distilled the method to its two most essential practices and applied them to individual work management.

Benson and Anderson had discussed the distinction between personal and corporate Kanban applications over chai in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood in May 2009, before the first-lean-kanban-conference. The Personal Kanban concept demonstrated the kanban-method's generality: its core mechanisms worked at the individual level as well as the team and organizational levels.
